The Ottawa County Horse Foundation has many goals, some of which include:
-establishing a show circuit, complete with high point awards for both speed and pleasure divisions
*2016 was the inaugural year for the Points on the Portage Circuit!
-sponsoring seminars, clinics, and other educational events that would appeal to all equine enthusiasts
We also aim to raise funds to improve the equine facilities at the Ottawa County Fairgrounds.
Some of the items on our "wish list" are:
-a newly constructed two-story entry booth, with the upper floor serving as an announcer's booth
-a shelter house that can house a food booth
-a covered show arena
We aim to achieve these goals by hosting fundraisers and horse shows.
Beginning in 2016, OCHF will be opening the arena to the public and hosting open ride nights on Thursdays from 6:00pm until dusk. These are free for OCHF members and $10/horse for non-members.
Accomplishments
Through hard work by volunteers and the generosity of our sponsors, we have already acheived some great things. The Ottawa County Fairgrounds is currently the only show facility in the county, and in it's years of use has required vast improvements.
The Foundation emerged in 2008 to see through the construction of new washracks for horses on the fairgrounds and lay dormant until 2014 when the arena renovation project was about to become a reality.
Here are pictures of those projects as well as others OCHF has undertaken in order to improve the experience of both the youth in 4-H and every "horse person" who may use the facility.
Wash Racks - 2008 - completely new construction
Show Arena & Makeup Arena - 2014 - new fencing, new footing, expansion
